What format do you shoot?...

Here are the results of the reader poll we have been running, "what format do you shoot?".

I was a little surprised at how few people shoot JPG.

It would interesting to hear from the folks who took the time to participate in the poll why they shoot the format they do.

I used to shoot jpg, but I was too stressed out making sure I had the correct white balance. Most of my shooting situations are very time sensitive so anything I can do to reduce worry about settings is helpful.

I now process everything through Capture NX2, so RAW makes sense as that is NX2's native format. Any editing changes in that program are non-destructive so I don't have to worry about keeping various versions of a picture.

In other words, RAW in my workflow is just simpler.

The majority of my shooting lately is 'sports' and to tell the truth it slips my mind to swap settings to 'raw' for other work!

I shoot RAW for the amazing detail and flexibility. Would I rather have an uncompressed picture with every bit of detail I can with incredible editing flexibility or a heavily compressed picture before I even start post-editing? That questions answers itself. :)

Memory is so unbelievably fast and cheap now that I can easily shoot RAW without worrying about running out of memory. Add to that a powerful computer that manipulates RAW files quickly, Lightroom which can batch process edits and exporting to JPG for print, and it just doesn't make sense to shoot JPG anymore.

Shooting RAW is the safety net that allows me to shoot confidently at weddings.

Raw is a safety net here as wel to add that extra little bit of flexibility during post for things like white balance, or a slight exposure adjustment, etc. It also is hugely helpful when shooting with HDR in mind as that malleability is crucial.
